Tapas

WHAT ARE TAPAS? The word seems to have originated from Andalusia. Tapas are small portions of foods served on a small plate or tray and intended as a snack, usually served with a “caña” or small glass of beer. There’s much debate about the origins of the meaning of the word “tapa” but it’s generally accepted that “tapear”, which means “to cover over”, to mean to COVER a small portion of food served at a bar in order to keep the flies off. Some bars don’t offer the tapa size at all – only larger portions called raciones – but still call themselves a “Bar de Tapas”.

Whether it’s for a snack before lunch, a snack before dinner, or making tapas your entire lunch or dinner, tapas in Madrid CAN BE an affordable alternative to a full meal. Most often, tapas are inexpensive (OR FREE!), the portions are quite small, and you can order many different tapas and share them with friends while standing at the bar – which is how it’s most often done.

ARE TAPAS FREE? Aha! Good question. Historically speaking, nearly every bar would give you one free tapa with your beer, wine, or vermouth order. The offering was always the bartenders choice – not yours – but if you really don’t like what’s offered you can always ask “¿Hay otra cosa?” or “Is there something different?” to change it to something you might like more. Fewer and fewer bars in Madrid (and Spain) offer these freebies. You’ll most often find the free tapas in the smaller, more neighorhood bars but many bars of this sort still remain in old downtown Madrid, including many of those in the galleries of Plaza Mayor. The (usually) nicer/fancier tapas bars SELL tapas and raciones – larger portions. In the city of Granada, for example, the FREE TAPA is very common and the size of the free tapas can be surprisingly large! So in Madrid, you’ll sometimes get a free tapa with your drink order at the bar. But if you want a specific tapa you’ll have to order and pay for it. Free tapas are usually something small like a plate of olives, potato chips, slices of chorizo, slice of tortilla de patata, olive-oil-swimming anchovies on a small slice of bread, a few peel-and-eat shrimp, almonds, small serving of paella, or almost anything.

“A tapear” – “Ir de tapas” or “to go for tapas”, is almost a sport! Many people, usually locals out on the weekends, will go from one bar to the next, only having one drink and one tapa at each establishment. Those whom are “in the know” will go to bars where they KNOW free tapas will be served with the drink order. If you are one of these people you can spend 1 to 2 € for a “caña” (small glass of beer), eat your free tapa, then move on to the next bar which serves a free tapa with your “caña”. It’s a wonderfully cheap way to go out, be with friends in many different places throughout the evening, and practically eat for free!

Most tapas bars don’t have tables or chairs so be sure you’re up to the task of standing at (OR NEAR) the bar where the tapas are served to you. Other tapas bars have chest-high counters along the walls or tall tables where clients can put their plates of tapas and drinks. At some of the smaller or more popular tapas bars available counter space can be a valuable commodity. Many people often find it uncomfortable to stand for long periods of time. But one can accomplish a quick “Tapas Stop” in about 10 minutes – enough time top to have a caña, tapa, and maybe use the restroom. A “Tapas Stop” can cost you as little as 1.50€. That’s not bad for what you get; a drink, snack, and a bathroom break. Then back to sightseeing in Madrid!

It’s common for couples or small groups to order a number of raciones or tapas and share them for their evening meal – then dividing the bill EQUALLY among the group (if with Spaniards) no matter if you ate a lot or a little. If you don’t want pay equally, speak about so BEFORE eat!

QUÉ SON LAS TAPAS? La palabra tiene su origen en Andalucía. Son porciones pequeñas de comida servidas en un plato pequeño o como un aperitivo, servidas con una bebida, generalmente una caña de cerveza. Hay mucho debate sobre el origen de la palabra pero se cree que se debe a que estas porciones tapaban el vaso para mantener las moscas fuera del líquido. Algunos bares ofrecen sólo unas porciones más grandes , llamadas raciones, aunque sigan llamándose bar de tapas. Se pueden tomar tapas como aperitivo de la comida o de la cena, pero también pueden ser una comida o una cena económica, compartiendo con los amigos raciones, algo que hacen muy frecuentemente los madrileños.

SON GRATIS? Es una buena pregunta. Existen sitios, como Granada, donde las tapas gratis son lo comúny son sorprendentemente grandes. En Madrid, en algunos bares, el camarero te pondrá una tapa pequeña que él haya elegido si es gratis. Puede er un trozo de otrtilla, unas aceitunas, almendras, una pequeña porción de paella, patatas fritas, …Siempre puedes preguntar si no tiene otra cosa, pero es elección suya. Pero todos los bares venden tapas y raciones, y si quieres algo especifico tendrá que pagar por ello.

Tapear o ir de tapas es un deporte en España! Los madrileños, generalmente en fines de semana, van a un bar, toman una caña o bebida y una tapa, y después cambian de bar y de tapa. Hay que saber donde es gratis la tapa, pero por 1,5 € aproximadamente puedes tomar la caña, la tapa, ir al baño y seguir hasta la siguiente parada! Es algo divertido para hacer con amigos. Los bares de tapas no son cómodos. Hay mucha gente, no tienen asientos, por lo que no se permanece mucho tiempo en cada uno.

Lo común en grupos pequeños o en parejas es que se ordenen las tapas en común y se paguen a partes iguales, no importa si has comido poco o mucho (es muy descortés entre españoles no dividir equitativamente la cuenta, así que si no quieres deberás advertirlo previamente).

Si quieres ahorrar dinero en tus comunicaciones móviles:

Las comunicaciones entre móviles extranjeros y números españoles es muy cara para ambos, y puede que tengas dificultades para contactar con tus amigos españoles..

• Orange (compañía de telefonía móvil) tiene una oferta especial. Si tienes un teléfono libre, puedes comprar una tarjeta para él por 12 €, y te darán un número español y 15€ en llamadas. Puedes recargarla si quieres. Esta oferta puedes encontrarla en tiendas Orange y en la FNAC (librería en Callao, Metro Callao).
• Simyo tiene las tarifas más bajas en telefonía nacional o internacional. La tarjeta para móviles libres cuesta 10 € y contiene 10 € en llamadas. Puedes comprarla en la tienda de la C/ Goya, 47 o por internet (envío gratis en 48 horas). Tarifas: nacional , llamada por minuto y SMS 0.1044€, SMS internacional 0.174, llamada internacional 0.406 € + 0.348 € minuto.

El Lagar en el Paseo de Arroyomolinos esquina Las Palmas (tiene un toldo rojo). Con cada caña (una jarra de medio casi) a 1,60€ eliges entre varios aperitivos con nombre de provincias entre las que hay una hamburguesa, pincho moruno, canapé de salmorejo con cinta de lomo…

El picalagartos en C/ Rio Duero, 21. La caña a 1,50€ o 1, 60€ en jarra y eliges (hamburguesa, montado de lomo, patatas…)

Cafeteria Nevada en c/ Huesca 9-11. Con la caña a 1,20€ (aquí es una copa) el hombre te saca una cestita de pan y dos o tres cazuelitas de barro con patatas revolconas (riquísimas), estofado, pollo adobado… y a partir de la segunda suele darte a elegir. Y con el café te sacan una bandeja llena de galletas diferentes donde elegir una para acompañar tu café.

El cris – Está en el parque de Aragón, un sitio pequeño que hace esquina donde con cada caña a 1,50€ te sacan una bandeja llena de patatas fritas con croquetas, salchichas, alitas de pollo, empanadillas, nuggets o algo similar … aquí todo son fritangas, pero la bandeja es grande y está bueno.
